Sustainability
NewsedTech is working toward the realization of a sustainable society within a new framework that goes beyond the traditional reuse industry.

Efforts Toward Carbon Neutrality:
Environmental conservation is important for smartphone manufacturers as well. For instance, Apple, which provides the iPhone, has already begun conducting life cycle assessments (LCA) of the greenhouse gas emissions associated with its products. Many reports indicate that a significant amount of CO₂ is emitted during manufacturing and transportation processes.
Since 2022, with the support of AIST, NewsedTech has initiated research to measure CO₂ reduction through reuse and contribute to carbon neutrality.About AIST – Learn more about the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology

Research on Smartphone Battery Degradation:
Batteries are an essential factor when considering carbon neutrality. Since 2020, NewsedTech has been conducting research on battery degradation by collaborating with the Yokokawa Laboratory (Professor Shinji Yokokawa) at the i-Powered Energy Systems Research Center of the National University Corporation, University of Electro-Communications. Through this industry-academia collaboration, we have performed cluster analyses based on user characteristics to study battery degradation. The results of this research have been incorporated into the development of our smartphone health check app, “Sumaho Carte.”

Lifecycle CO₂ Emissions of Used Smartphones:
In 2023, NewsedTech conducted an analysis of the CO₂ emissions throughout the lifecycle of used smartphones. The aim of this study was to visualize the CO₂ reduction effects achieved by utilizing used products and to leverage the data obtained. The results of this survey are intended for the following purposes:
- To share with customers as sales material, thereby contributing to the promotion of corporate sustainability
- To be used as a reference element within our smartphone health check algorithm to support the evaluation and optimal use of devices
The findings are especially targeted toward companies that have adopted corporate mobile contracts and are either recognizing their social responsibility toward climate change or are actively pursuing sustainability initiatives.
We aim to clearly communicate the environmental benefits of using used smartphones and help drive corporate sustainability measures. -
Joint Research Toward Realizing a Circular Economy Business Model:
In the 2024 fiscal year, NewsedTech conducted joint research with the University of Tokyo. The purpose of this research was to propose a procedure for designing a new digital platform (DP)–based circular economy business model (※) based on our existing business. The research approach included the following methods:
- Establishing DP Categories: Defining categories for digital platforms and, based on these, creating alternative concepts.
- Conducting Case Studies: Carrying out a case study on the smartphone refurbishing business to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
The results of this research were presented at the Precision Engineering Society meeting held in March 2024.
(※)Principles for Realizing a Circular Economy (CE) Business Model:
- Create economic benefits
- Minimize resource input as well as waste and emissions
- Establish a framework in which all stakeholders can achieve their respective goals
